East Riding Archives and Local Studies offers you the chance to access the extensive and unique archives collection (dating from 1129 to present) based at Champney Treasure House.

We collect the written and photographic heritage of the East Riding, its communities and its people. We preserve this unique collective memory for present and future generations. We encourage and support the use of our collections by everyone for research, learning and enjoyment. Viewing original archives is free to everyone, however there are charges for making copies for personal research. Viewing collections is by appointment only. Please pre-order items or book a computer by 1pm on the previous working day. Please call or email for appointment availability. Find out how to book online and all research room rules on the using the archives page

Volunteering

Volunteers are a valuable part of the East Riding Archives team, helping us promote our collections to researchers all around the world.

There is no payment for volunteer work but you will get:

• training in the jobs we ask you to do
• new skills to add to your CV
• discount in Champney Treasure House café with an Archives Card

What skills do I need?

All you need is plenty of enthusiasm and an interest for supporting local heritage. 

Volunteering can be done remotely or on-site at the Archives.

Most tasks will require the ability to use a computer.

Public transport

It is a five minute walk to the train station and bus station in Beverley.

Parking

Pay and Display parking behind Champney Treasure House on Saturdays only. Nearest pay and display car park is Grayburn Lane. Limited on street parking is available within easy walking distance. Disabled parking bays directly outside both entrances.

Visitors arriving by coach or minibus can be dropped off at the coach drop-off point on Lord Roberts Road, next to the Magistrates Court. It is approximately a 1 minute walk around the corner onto Champney Road toChampney Treasure House.

Location accessibility

All public areas of Champney Treasure House are accessible to wheelchairs, including the research room and toilets. The research room desk has a hearing loop installed. There are six disabled parking spaces located at Champney Treasure House. There is a lift to the coffee lounge and galleries on the first floor. Only assistance dogs are allowed on site.
